What People Say About Us

We receive lots of letters of compliment from guests who have enjoyed their stay at The Royal and the following are some of these comments.

I have stayed several times at your hotel and I can say I always look forward to my visits. The breakfast is of the very highest standard. I hope to be able to continue my visits on a regular basis. My last visit 6th December, I stayed in a luxury room (109 I believe) – again first class.

We as a family stayed 2 nights at this hotel and had a great time and were all full of praise for this hotel. The double room was nicer than the single but this is as you'd expect. The detail in the rooms was very good and the staff were very helpful and in particular a mention for the cleaner who was kind enough to delay cleaning our room whilst we had to wait in prior to catching a train. Breakfast got 100% from us and was very tasty and set us up for a days sightseeing. All in all we thought that taking into account cost and location, this is a great hotel for a few days in Bath. I have read the comments about the decor but for us this was in keeping with the City of Bath and added to the Christmas charm. I would choose this hotel over a bland Premier Inn every time. Hopefully will visit the lovely city of Bath again and will stay in the same hotel!!

I disagree with vacation123 that this hotel is not for the experienced traveller - I consider myself fairly experienced, and I value many things more than a large room. Take for example the excellent tea and coffee making facilities- real coffee and cafetiere, proper tea and biscuits. The massively comfy beds, the fact that you are not bothered by noise from the street or the train station directly opposite, the friendly reception staff, the delicious hot breakfast- these things matter more to me than a big room, or bang up to date decor. The hotel is ideally situated- we walked everywhere- and the locality feels safe even at night. Loads of good restaurants nearby, Bath is a great place to explore for a couple of days, and the Royal is a great place to stay while you’re doing it. Will be back

Very happy with the room – it’s good to see biscuits and tea/coffee still in prominence. This hotel isn’t run of the mill – well done.

If I could give this hotel 5 stars I would. Fantastic service from all staff and they really wanted you to enjoy your stay, the food was excellent. Our room was spotless and very nice decor. The price of their food and drink is also very good. We were central to the station and chose to arrive by train and walked everywhere, it was so easy. We intend to return next year, so if you plan to visit Bath you couldn’t find a better place to stay.

My wife and I have just returned from a weekend in Bath and we stayed at The Royal for the second time. We had a lovely stay and its good value for money. All the staff are friendly and welcoming and they look after you. The food is first class. The room we stayed in [205] was clean, spacious and nicely decorated. .Also the bed was very comfortable. The Royal is well situated as all the local places of interest and the shops are close at hand. To sum up a really good Hotel with excellent facilities and caring friendly staff. I forgot to mention the bar and the restaurant were really nice as well. We will definitely be returning to the Royal. Thanks to everyone at The Royal for making our stay so enjoyable.

We recently stayed at this hotel on a spa break. This was great value for money as well as being a most enjoyable 2 day break. The hotel was in a great position and the traffic noise mentioned by some was forgotten in all the plus sides of this hotel. Staff were so friendly and helpful, the room was very comfortable, clean and well equipped and the food was first class. We had bed and breakfast and evening meal and the food quality was excellent at every meal. Would I go back ? Yes definitely - the hotel lacks a little kerb appeal but once you are in the warmth and excellent service are the tops. Thank you to all the staff who work so hard to make it so.

I have stayed in this hotel several times now. It is in a good location, near to the train station and a short walk from the Abbey. The staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and comfortable and the food is excellent. The hotel is warm in winter and not too noisy in spite of its location.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 days recently and thoroughly recommend it. The staff were all friendly, polite and pleasant, going out of their way to help on more than one occasion. The rooms are clean, comfortable and well maintained. I was worried that it would be noisy as it is close to the railway station, but did not notice any noise at all from inside the room. The location is fantastic, easy walking distance of all attractions and transport links. The restaurant was also great.

We booked one night here as part of a spa break. The hotel offers spa breaks at the Thermae Bath Spa (2 hours) which can be upgraded to one of the treatments offered by the spa. We arrived early but parked the car in one of the 6 car parking spaces (book in advance!), and went to the spa for the afternoon. When we checked in, the room (304) was large and comfortable. We reserved a table for dinner at 8.30. The meal and service was superb - duck with prunes and an Armagnac sauce excellently complimented by a nice Italian wine recommended by the Maitre'd. There was some noise from the street during the night but this was not excessive. Breakfast was ample and well cooked, although service was a little slow, possibly due to the number of guests. In summary, I can highly recommend this hotel, great location, comfortable rooms, great food and friendly staff. Charlotte on reception was really helpful when I rang to book.

Great hotel and service We loved everything about our stay at this hotel. The location made it easy to walk into bath city centre, the room was comfortable and clean, and the restaurant was far better than we expected from a hotel which provides such excellent value for money - the food was delicious, and the staff were pleasant and attentive without bothering us. If we stay in bath again, the choice of hotel will be an easy one!

Excellent Hotel Superb Location Stayed in Room 104 on 9th and 10th September. All members of staff were extremely helpful, from reception, bar, restaurant and domestics cleaning the room. Our room was very clean, and yes whilst it was an old hotel it had character. It was ideally situated, and the food was fabulous including breakfast which provided everything you could wish for. I thought this was reasonably priced being centrally located in a busy city. The bar prices were the same as nearby pubs. I would definitely recommend this hotel, and next time we are in Bath this is where I would stay.

As a single woman staying at the hotel whilst on business, I have been truly overwhelmed by the natural ease and friendliness from all staff during my stay. I have been made to feel very welcome by everyone at varying times of the day. It made me feel safe and secure. The Royal Hotel is a lovely, friendly run hotel which I would recommend most highly. Located so conveniently to the amenities (and my place of work). It has been a real pleasure to stay here. Thank you all for making my stay so comfortable and memorable.

“I wish I could have stayed longer” I loved this hotel. It's decorated in the Georgian style, wholly appropriate to Bath, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very generous. I had dinner at the restaurant as well and was very glad that I did. It's right across from the train station and not more than 8 minutes walk from the Abbey in the center of Bath. So it's very convenient because Bath is small enough that it doesn't have a dodgy area around the station like bigger cities do. As a single woman on my own I felt perfectly safe and comfortable, and was really glad not to have to lug my suitcase any further. I also really appreciated that you can charge your room in GBP or in US$, thus saving you the international finance charge on your credit card.

“English hospitality at it's best” We stayed at the Royal on a very busy weekend caused by a Rugby match at the Bath ground. Whilst the staff seemed to be under pressure at times, they coped extremely well and were always more than helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was clean and nicely presented with plenty of drink options, a television, kettle and hairdryer that all worked. We loved the feeling of an old fashioned, traditional hotel with approachable staff. Well done 'The Royal' - you are unique!

“Really enjoyable stay” we stayed as part of the spa package weekend, this included B&B, 3 course dinners, champagne, cream tea and entry to Thermae Bath Spa. The rest of the time we shopped till we dropped! The Hotel is perfectly located for train station, shops, spa etc., you can walk everywhere and even come back to hotel to drop off shopping, it is all ten or so minutes away. The dinner was excellent both nights and superb value- steak particularly good, service friendly, efficient and attentive. Full breakfast was relaxed and generous. Room (no. 120 I think) - a twin room - was lovely - bit small but high ceilings so fine - bathroom gorgeous and recently refurbished. hotel were really accommodating; we didn’t have time to have the cream tea until the Sunday afternoon (having checked out Sunday morning) it was no problem - we stored all our shopping at the hotel and had the cream tea and champers before getting on the train at 5.30 pm! nothing was a problem to the staff and overall, a great weekend and bath at Christmas is lovely - we went to the xmas markets too - gorgeous.

5 of us stayed at The Royal the weekend before last, booking a Xmas shopping break. We booked a triple and double room and although we did not ask the rooms were next to each other which was really nice (we have tried in previous years at different hotel groups, booking well in advance in July and we have been miles apart McDonald Hotels in particular do not honour requests). The rooms were lovely, the triple was quite roomy always difficult when you have 3 women staying together. Hotel service was excellent, we had a lovely welcome when we arrived and we were told that our rooms were ready well before the standard check in time. We had a lovely evening meal in the hotel restaurant, very festive and service was excellent only one critism they had sold out of my favourite desert.. Very good value for money. We also had lunch in the bar one day again very quick service considering how busy they were and excellent staff. Breakfast was the best I have ever had, plenty of choice and the waiter was very good with our requests. We all agreed we had a wonderful time, plenty of coffee etc in the room, even water and filter coffee available. Could not recommend highly enough, we would definitely visit again.

“I have stayed in all varieties of hotels both overseas and United Kingdom and where possible like to take my wife away to enjoy short breaks. It was a pleasant surprise therefore when booking a hotel in Bath that we decided to stay at The Royal Hotel principally for its location. I think it can be somewhat of a gamble staying in “Town” hotels and glossy brochures can be deceiving but we were impressed on all counts with your establishment. We found that the changes you have made to this historic building are in keeping with its past, clean and well maintained by the staff and the modern bar brings old and new perfectly together. The dinner we enjoyed on my birthday was excellent with my steak perfectly cooked for the first time how I like it. This was equally followed through by the excellent breakfast and a longer stay was needed to appreciate the most diverse menu I have seen. So congratulations on bringing such an important building to life. Brunel would be proud!”
