Our Top Tips for Romantic Days in Bath

With all the right ingredients in place, you will be able to enjoy your romantic day to the full:

  • Accommodation – This is the easiest decision you’ll have to make when planning your day as the Royal Hotel, with its timeless charm, really is the perfect place when it comes to romantic hotels in Bath.
  • Breakfast – If you have decided to stay with us at the Royal Hotel, there really is no better way to start your morning than with a full English breakfast served by our cheerful kitchen team.
  • Sightseeing – There’s plenty to explore in Bath, with endless amounts of history and culture to discover. If you visit in the summer months, we recommend hiring a rowboat or a punt on the River Avon after breakfast. Alternatively, you can join one of the commercial boat trips that leave from Pulteney Bridge on a regular basis if you fancy a more relaxing experience.
  • Lunch – You can either head back to the Royal Hotel for a delicious lunch or wander to one of the local eateries, such as the Green Park Brasserie. In either case, you can look forward to a wonderful meal in beautiful surroundings. Another option worth considering is a picnic lunch in one of the many local green spaces.
  • Dinner – For guests who want to try a few different dinner spots during their stay with us, we often recommend a trip to Corkage. Great wine, tasty dishes made from seasonal ingredients and first-class service all combine to make Corkage a fantastic venue for a romantic dinner. It’s the perfect spot, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just after great food and quality time together.

After you have finished your dinner, why not indulge in a nightcap in our 1846 Bar, before heading back to your room for some much needed rest?

A Brief Romantic History of Bath

Bath has romance woven into every aspect of its long and illustrious history. Thousands of years ago, the Roman Baths were places of rest and relaxation as well as of religion. The natural hot springs the baths were built around were dedicated to the Roman goddess Sulis Minerva, and there is archaeological evidence suggesting that visitors sought her blessings for personal matters including love and relationships.

The Georgian era saw Bath become the ultimate romantic getaway for the upper classes, attracting aristocrats, writers and socialites alike. If you’re a Jane Austen fan, you’ll know that she set some parts of her famous novels in Bath, including Persuasion and Northanger Abbey as backdrops for themes of love, longing and second chances.

Built between 1769 and 1774, Pulteney Bridge remains one of Bath’s most iconic landmarks and has a fascinating history tied to love and romance. It was originally inspired by Florence’s Ponte Vecchio, and was commissioned by wealthy landowner WIlliam Pulteney to impress his wife. Despite having undergone repairs and reconstructions since, it has managed to hold onto its charm and remain a symbol of romance into the present day.
