Bath is a beautiful city that is well worth visiting at any time but it’s especially fun to visit during the warmer months of the year. Read on for the best ideas of things to do during your holiday in this picturesque part of the country.

Summer Breaks in Bath: What to See and Do

Whether you are young or old, travelling alone or with friends and family, summer is a fantastic time to discover Bath and its environs. From country walks and picnics to beer gardens and festivals, there’s something for everybody to enjoy.

Country Walks

If all you want to do on your break is take in the fresh air and appreciate the local scenery, Bath is a fantastic destination for a summer break. In addition to the historic architecture for which the city is famous, you will find plenty of open countryside to enjoy in the surrounding area. Dyrham Park, the River Avon Trail and the Royal Victoria Park are just a few of the pastoral places you can enjoy exploring while you are here.

The Best Picnic Spots

If you want to stay in the centre of the city, we recommend Parade Gardens for a summer picnic spot. For a more bucolic setting where you can still enjoy stunning views across the city, Bathwick Fields is a great choice.

Beer Gardens

Many of the city’s pubs and hotels boast beautiful beer gardens where you can enjoy a relaxing drink at any time of the day during the summer.

Festivals

Many people book summer breaks in Bath so they can attend one or more of the festivals that are held here every year. From live music and sports-themed occasions to literary festivals, there is a host of fun events from which to choose.

If you would like to find out for yourself why summer breaks in Bath are so popular, please don’t hesitate to book a room at The Royal this year.

Caveman Curiosity at Cheddar Gorge

Located just a hop, skip and a jump from Bath is Cheddar Gorge & Caves. This year from July 25 to September 1 the whole family will be able to embark on a caveman adventure where they journey back in time via immersive activities that evoke prehistoric life.

There will be live demonstrations of hunter-gatherer life, visitors can learn how primitive humans harnessed fire and the Tunnel Through Time will awaken your inner caveman as you walk in the footsteps of our ancestors around Gough’s Cave.

Theme Parks

If you’re out and about in Bath with the kids why not spend an afternoon at one of the nearby theme parks. The Longleat Safari Park is located just 30 minutes outside of Bath and does an outstanding job of recreating the feel of a genuine African safari. You’ll come face to face with zebras, rhinos, tigers, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, wolves, giraffes and other wildlife.

The Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park is also located just a short drive outside of Bath and offers a variety of kid-friendly activities including animatronic dinosaurs, off-road driving, Toy Train ride, foam party and much more. Avon Valley is more for the younger kids while Longleat Safari Park is more appropriate for older kids, say 10 and up.

Bike Rides

Bath is well-known for its compelling mix of cycling routes that wind and weave their way through the city and surrounding area. You can rent a bike on your own and spend the day going where the wind takes you. Or you can arrange a family bike ride at one of several locations in town. This is an affordable way to have some great fun while staying in shape.

Take a Tour of the Roman Baths

What would Bath be without the Roman Baths that have been drawing people here for nearly 2,000 years? These days more than 1 million people visit the Roman Baths annually. (Suggestion: visiting during the week will enable you to avoid most of the crowds!) While many of the surrounding buildings you see today date to the 18th the central core is still Roman.
