Famous People from Bath

However much we may not admit it, we all love a celebrity, right? Especially when they come from our own hometown. We may never have met them, but we feel connected to them, somehow.

Despite being a humble heritage city, Bath has quite a number of claims to fame, from professional footballers to global baking icons. Who could that be, we wonder?

Here are a few local names you may have heard of, and there are many more besides…

Mary Berry

On your marks, get set, bake!

Yes, you guessed it, the legendary baker and judge on Channel 4’s Great British Bake Off was born in Bath in 1935. Her dad served as the Mayor of Bath and she attended Bath High School, where a local teacher helped her develop an early interest in cooking. Now, her reputation precedes her.

Indira Varma

Winter is coming!

Another classic, and a possible surprise, but yes – Indira Varma, who played Ellaria Sand in the hugely popular Game of Thrones series, is from Bath.

In her early years, she was a member of the Musical Youth Theatre Company in the city and, as well as her role as Ellaria, she has starred in a number of popular shows – including Torchwood and Luther.

Jacqueline Wilson

Dame Jacqueline Wilson, known for writing over 100 children’s books and, namely, the popular Tracy Beaker series, spent most of her childhood growing up in Kingston on Thames in London.

However, the best-selling author was indeed born in Bath. During her incredible career, she has sold over 35 million books worldwide.

Scott Sinclair

Another famous product of Bath is Scott Sinclair, the professional English football player who has featured for Manchester City, Aston Villa and Celtic, amongst others.

He started his career with Bath Arsenal, before joining Bristol Rovers at the age of nine. He attended Ralph Allen School as a youngster and has represented his country at Under 17, Under 21 and Olympic level.
